Fred Nicholls lives in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. He served for three years in the navy during World War Two, ending up as a watch-keeping officer in a fleet minesweeper then made his career as a teacher of English, sailing his own small boat in his spare time. He has an ancestor who was a windjammer captain, and has had a lifelong interest in the sea and ships. His own experience at sea enables him to write convincingly about ships and the people who man them.

"Brilliantly evokes the hardships, and also humour, of life at sea under sail, with a cast of characters who will linger in the memory"

Alex Barr, poet and winner of the 2005 Purple Dragon Short Story Competition

"I laughed and I also wept over this absorbing and candid tale of the crew and passengers aboard a 4-masted, cargo-carrying Welsh barque placed in the 1890s... A rich novel worth reading more than once!"

Atinuke Sears, children's author and winner of the Gryphon Awards, Notable Books for a Global Society (NBGS) Book Award, the Cybils Award and the  Globe Horn Book Awards.

Master Under God, a realistic picture of life aboard a large sailing merchant ship in 1896, is addressed to all novel-readers of either gender, for the ship's company includes the captain's wife and grown-up daughter, and while the ship goes about her hazardous world-wide business, serious tensions develop among her crew and officers, and a family and romantic drama is going on behind the scenes. While the story is entirely fictitious, nothing happens in it which wouldn't have happened in real life, which means that, as in real life, humour keeps cropping up.
