"I turned the pages of A State of Natural Catastrophe by Tony Craze with increasing amusement and in awe of his writing. He paints in the minutia of his characters' lives with the cold eye of an outsider, but with the affectionate detail of someone who may have lived among people like these all his life. It's a delight to go from story to story as wily country folk try to reconcile their loves and hates that reach such epic proportions in their small lives . . . This work reminded me of Marcel Pagnol's Jean de Florette. Great read"

In a small forgotten rural village in the Midi-Pyrenees, following excessive rains preceded by drought, inhabitants await outcome of an application for recognition of the commune as a state of natural catastrophe; as they wait so cracks and fissures in the landscape are reflected in their lives.

Religious beliefs are found to be as cracked as the village church of St Rita; marriages crumble just as the old monastery and broken roads; a mother refuses to seek help for a son dying in an orgy of fois gras and illicitly brewed absinthe and a lone farmer sits the day long with his gun waiting to ward off the invisible threat . . .

The inhabitants are of la France profonde living in dilapidated farmhouses scattered through the commune and in the village itself where exterior stone steps are often still the only method of ascending to the first floor of their 15th century dark stoned-dwellings. The landscape of forests, hills and rolling fields ever confront the inhabitants with nature’s laws, with a God who has placed them down on an antagonistic earth where as poor protagonists they must battle their lives. They are inured to concepts of change save that of the seasons which reflect the emotional shifts of lives ever searching for some small rapture amid nature’s decay.

Set over a period of one year, A State of Natural Catastrophe records the journey of Le Castéra’s inhabitants to final acknowledgement of the incompleteness, imperfection and impermanence of their lives.
